Cervical Screening for transgender female to male patients

Patients who have transitioned from female to male who have a cervix are still entitled to a smear. However, smears for this group of patients are outside the national cervical screening programme.

The responsibility lies with the GP to ensure that those who require screening have the opportunity to access it. The practice will also need to notify the patient of their result, action any abnormal results and advise patients of their recall date.

The samples can still be sent to the lab for cytology but must be clearly labelled to indicate that the sample is taken from a male and is outside the national screening programme
