Sharps Bin Disposal - update from Barnsley CCG May 2022

As you will be aware there has been a change to how patients dispose of Sharps Bins, unfortunately the CCG were not alerted to this change until after it had occurred, so please accept our apologies in this delayed communication.

What’s happened?

The ‘drop boxes’ for patients to dispose of sharps bins have been removed from LIFT buildings. This means that patients are no longer able to dispose of sharps bins at LIFT buildings.

What is the CCG doing?
The CCG is working with partners to understand what arrangements have been in place historically, what should be in place and how we can best support practices through this change.

What should GP practices do now?

Practices should begin to accept full sharps bins from their own patients and dispose of them in the same way they dispose of GP waste. We understand that for some practices this will be difficult, but please rest assured we are working through ways in which we can provide support to practices.
