Migraine Management in Primary Care- Headaches


This guideline covers advice on the diagnosis and management of migraine in adult patients.  It aims to improve the recognition and management of migraine, highlight red flag symptoms and provide advice on when to refer. 

This guidance has been produced by Dr Fiona McKevitt, Consultant Neurologist, STH with Primary Care Sheffield CASES Neurology Team and STH Neurology Department.
It has  been endorsed by the Barnsley Area Prescribing Committee (March 2024).

The migraine management document has been updated and approved by the South Yorkshire Integrated Medicines Optimisation Committee. The main changes are MHRA guidance for Topiramate is more explicit, inclusion of Rimegepant as a third line acute treatment and treatments available in secondary care are now listed.
