MSK Outpatient Physiotherapy Services - Paediatrics

They are a team of specialist paediatric musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapists working at Sheffield Children's Hospital (SCH). They accept referrals from GPs directly, as well as via the orthopaedic team at Sheffield Children’s for children and young people aged between 0–16 years old with MSK complaints. (Patients aged 16+ need to be referred to the adult MSK service).

Our referral rates inform us that many GP practices in Sheffield are not referring directly into physiotherapy and are referring all children with MSK complaints to orthopaedics. In a number of these cases the orthopaedic team subsequently refer these children to the physiotherapy team following their assessment, without any investigations or orthopaedic intervention. This creates a delay in the child receiving the treatment they require. For many of the conditions we see physiotherapy is the primary step of the patients’ management plan. We have a full understanding of paediatric MSK complaints and therefore ask you consider referring to our team in the first instance for the conditions below:

Referrals can be emailed to scn-tr.physio-admin@nhs.net .

The service accepts letters or a copy of the appointment notes.  They also currently accept referrals sent via post, but email is preferable and minimises delay for the patients.

Who should be referred

Referrals accepted for the following conditions:

o Mechanical spinal spine in children over 10 years old

o Torticollis

o Shoulder pain and instability

o Post-fracture rehabilitation

o Traction apophysitis

o Snapping hip

o Known diagnosis of Perthes

o Post-surgical SUFE

o Hip pain (please consider Perthes/SUFE first)

o Post hip surgeries

o Patellofemoral pain and instability

o Toe walking

o Diagnosed apophysis avulsion fracture

o Ankle instability

o Generalised leg pain

o Symptomatic flexible flat feet

o Positional talipes

 

Referrals not accepted for the following:

o Headaches

o TMJ

o Spine pain in under 10-year-olds - refer directly to spinal team at SCH

o Concerns over possible scoliosis - refer directly to spinal team at SCH

o Suspected Scheuermann’s – refer directly to spinal team at SCH

o Concerns regarding possible spondylolisthesis - refer directly to spinal team at SCH

o Obstetric brachial plexus injury – refer to Ryegate under 5’s physiotherapy team.

o Wrist and hand injuries/pain – send directly to hand therapy at SCH

o Suspicion of possible SUFE - redirect to Emergency Department

o Suspicion of possible Perthes - X ray and refer to orthopaedics

o In-toeing/out-toeing gait – refer directly to orthopaedics at SCH

o Genu varum/genu valgum - refer directly to orthopaedics at SCH

o Suspicion of neurological disorders

o Facial palsy
