Stroke Rehabilitation Unit (Integrated Community Stroke Rehabilitation Unit)

As well as the active and intensive rehabilitation provided by the Stroke Recovery Unit, support is also provided for stroke patients who require longer-term stroke management at a much slower pace and intensity. Appropriate support and specialist input is a significant factor in the maintenance and further continuation of the rehabilitation of patients. Therefore, all patients with a primary diagnosis of a stroke will have access to a specialised stroke service whether or not it is delivered inside or outside of the Stroke Recovery Unit.

The Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at Kendray Hospital provides a borough-wide community rehabilitation service, which enables people who have had a stroke to access a service which specialises in stroke and rehabilitation.

The Stroke Service consists of 3 main elements:

  • 12 inpatient rehabilitation beds based at Kendray Hospital
  • An early supported discharge team which allows patients to receive intensive therapy at home if they are medically stable
  • Community stroke team for patients who may have ongoing rehabilitation needs, with achievable goals
