Yorkshire Smokefree Barnsley

Service overview

Yorkshire Smokefree Barnsley has helped many people to stop smoking successfully and is a key part of tobacco control and health inequalities policies both at local and national level.

Many smokers will need to make multiple attempts to quit before achieving long-term success and it is every health professional’s responsibility to raise the subject of stopping smoking at every opportunity.

  • Smokers expect to be asked about smoking as it shows a health professional’s concern about their overall health.
  • If health professionals fail to mention smoking at every consultation, smokers are given the impression that it is not affecting their health and are less likely to make a quit attempt.

Core service stop smoking programme

The core service provides a 12-week support programme.  The client attends weekly for the first four weeks and then fortnightly for the rest of the course.  The first contact with the client will last approximately 40mins and they will be asked about their smoking habits, levels of addiction and their health in general.  On each return appointment the levels of carbon monoxide will be tested to confirm the smoking status. (Readings under 6ppm is classed as a non-smoker) Vouchers are provided for stop smoking medications weekly for the first 4 weeks and then fortnightly up to the end of the course if appropriate. Currently stop smoking medication is free for the full 12-week programme.
