Asthma/ COPD Spirometry, Reversibility and FeNO

Spirometry update - Service commencing at the Barnsley Hospital Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC)
The Barnsley CDC will soon be delivering spirometry, reversibility and FeNO.
This service will commence on 2 June 2025.
Initially, there are 2 rooms at the CDC on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 08:30-17:00.  Tests will be by appointment only.
  1. Referrals will be by email to cardiology.adminteam@nhs.net.  Telephone enquiries 01226 432171 (Cardiology Admin Team)

  2. Considerations prior to referral are attached - see below
  3. Exclusions – Any patient being transported by the ambulance service for their appointments will not be able to have the aforementioned tests at the CDC.  Instead they will need to attend the Cardiology Dept for the tests.  Our CDC appointment letters ask these patients to contact the Cardiology Admin Team for an appointment.  If the GP is aware that the patient uses the ambulance service, can they mention it on the referral and we will send the patient an appointment to attend the hospital instead of the CDC.

  4. It is planned that the tests results will be emailed, as a PDF, to the GP practice

  5. FeNO is a very useful test in the diagnosis of asthma.  There are 2 categories;
    1) children aged 5 to 16 with a history suggesting asthma,
    2) Adults and young people aged over 16 years with a history suggesting asthma.

    Two algorithms are attached with guidance for diagnostics for diagnosing asthma that have been issued by BTS, NICE and SIGN guideline on asthma.

  6. Practices can continue to offer these services in house to their patients if they choose. The CDC offer can be used as an alternative or if the practice is unable to offer these services in house.
