Radiology Alerts

Radiology alert codes are changing for the better.

From the 28th of April 2025, the GP CANCER alert and the MDT alert will be discontinued and replaced with a CANCER alert.

The CANCER alert will be used for suspected new cancers (except lung cancer), or a newly detected cancer recurrence. The alert includes the suspected Primary Tumour Site so that you know which specialty to refer the patient to.

Suspected lung cancer on chest radiographs will continue to be alerted in the usual way with a dedicated Primary Care Lung Cancer alert that triggers a notification to the Lung CNS team who will contact the patient to arrange an urgent CT on the Optimum Lung Cancer Pathway.

The change brings us in line with the recommendations from the document published by the AoMRC and endorsed by the RCR in 2022, Alerts and Notification of Imaging Reports, and it has been a collaborative process involving primary and secondary care colleagues, cancers services and Business Intelligence.

The system of radiology alerts is a safety net only. It is still the referrer’s responsibility to read, file and action radiology reports.

Warm regards,
