Continence and Urology Services

Referrals to the Community Continence and Urology Service will only be accepted if these are received using the accompanying service referral forms.

Referral information received not using the relevant service referral form will be rejected and returned to the referrer.

All completed referral forms and any accompanying information should be emailed to the RightCare Barnsley Integrated Single Point of Access (SPA) using the following email address:-

Primary care colleagues wishing to e-refer via TPP SystmOne into the Community Continence and Urology Service can do so via the e-refer option but please ensure that the contents of the service’s referral form is listed in the ‘Communications and Letters’ section of the patients SystmOne clinical record.   

Adults Service Inclusion Criteria

  • Any person over 19 with an identified bladder and or bowel problem, who is registered with a Barnsley GP.  (Please note we are not able to deliver continence aids outside of the Barnsley geographical boundary).
  • For care home referrals the services requires the completion of a 24-hr care home continence referral, Bladder Frequency Volume Chart, Bowel Diary, and medication chart.

For information:

Requests for the following, should be directed to the Community Neighbourhood Nursing Service via the Single Point of Access, these should not be referred to the Community Continence and Urology Service:

  • Urgent catheterisation, patient in pain, not able to pass urine (Please phone the SPA on 01226 644575)
  • Female catheters
  • Nephrostomy Care
  • Ordering of catheter equipment
  • Bowel management (manual evacuation)

Children’s Service Inclusion Criteria

Children over 4 years of age must:

  • Have a Statement of Education Needs/Education and Care Plan
  • Have continence problems due to having a physical or learning disability that affects ability to become continent
  • Be under the care of a Consultant Paediatrician

Children’s Service Exclusion Criteria

  • The service cannot provide support to children who are toilet trained, experiencing nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting) or faecal incontinence due to constipation
  • Children under 4 years are not accepted by the service

Please note:  It is inappropriate to provide continence products where incontinence is secondary to underlying causes such as:

  • Children requiring products for occasional use e.g., holidays, travel
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Inappropriate fluid intake
  • Short term incontinence following surgical procedures

General Documentation (NOT REFERRAL RELATED) to the Community Continence and Urology Service

As described, all referral related information / documentation should accompany the referral via an email to the RightCare Barnsley Integrated Single Point of Access (SPA).
