NHS Talking Therapies (formerly known as IAPT)

NHS Talking Therapies service aims to improve access to psychological therapy and provides evidence based treatments for common mental health problems.

Support offered

  • Assessment of mental health needs
  • Signposting to voluntary sector organisations and other services in order to meet people’s needs
  • Psychoeducational groups to manage stress, anxiety and low mood
  • Guided self-help
  • cCBT – an online computer programme for common mental health problems
  • Self-help materials
  • Counselling for depression
  • Couples therapy for depression
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Cognitive behaviour therapy groups for trauma, depression, anxiety and low mood
  • The IAPT service offer is provided in Barnsley College for students
  • Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Intensive Care Unit department has commissioned a cognitive behaviour therapist to provide trauma focused cognitive behaviour therapy within the department

 

Accessing the service

Patients can self refer via the IAPT website www.barnsleyiapt.co.uk self refer is at the top of the first page 

Referral guidelines

Carers/family, CMHTs, Consultants, GPs, Hospital staff, Other Trust services.

The person being referred must be aware and in agreement with the referral. 

We also accept self-referrals.

Who should be referred

Issues IAPT can help with: 

  • General Anxiety Disorder
  • Panic
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) 
  • Mild - Severe Depression with mild -moderate functional impairment 
  • Health Anxiety
  • Social Anxiety
  • Single event trauma resulting in Post Traumatic Stress 
  • Phobia
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder (with mild functional impairment)
  • Work Related Stress

Issues that could delay referral until addressed: 

  • Homelessness
  • Benefits crisis
  • Loneliness
  • Domestic Abuse
  • Child or Adult Safeguarding
  • Unstable alcohol or substance misuse impacting on wellbeing and functioning 
  • Childhood history of oppositional defiant disorder or behavioural problems
  • Convictions for multiple violent offences

IAPT is not able suitable for people with the any of the following :

  • Multiple event or prolonged
  • Psychosis / Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Borderline or Emotionally unstable
  • Personality Disorder
  • Anti-social Personality Disorder
  • Eating Disorders
  • Anger Management 
  • People with moderate to severe cognitive impairment
