Gynaecology service

General gynaecology outpatients clinic

These clinics deal with a wide range of disorders in women of all ages.  Examples are:

• Heavy Periods
• Subfertility
• Pelvic pain & Endometriosis
• Prolapse of womb
• Vaginal discharge
• Vulval diseases
• Other gynaecological symptoms

Children are also be referred to this clinic but are always seen in the child friendly environment of the paediatric (children’s) department.

Colposcopy clinic

Patients are referred to this clinic for further investigation and treatment following a smear test result.  The focus of the clinic is health promotion and wellbeing and prevention of cancer of the neck of the womb.

Post menopausal bleeding and hysteroscopy clinic

Patients can be referred to this clinic if they are experiencing heavy or irregular periods or if they are experiencing post menopausal bleeding.  The clinic is also part of the overall cancer services in the hospital and has a lead clinician and a specialist nurse who see patients who are urgently referred to us by their GP for suspected cancer.

Urogynaecology and urodynamic clinic

This specialist clinic deals with women who may be experiencing urinary continence (waterworks) can be referred to this clinic to receive expert medical and nursing advice regarding this sensitive health problem.  We use a range of first line diagnostic and non-surgical treatments as well as assessment for surgical corrections if needed.

We also offer two further specialist clinics for pregnant women:

Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit

Patients who experience early pregnancy bleeds will be referred here to undergo ultrasound assessment and biochemical testing to check the progress of the pregnancy.  The service is currently only available during week days but in the future we are hoping to offer our ultrasound service out of hours and at weekends for added convenience and peace of mind.

Termination of pregnancy

This service is led by nurses with a consultant.  The service is available five days a week via a GP referral.  Patients requesting to end a pregnancy will be seen and assessed and if the pregnancy is below 16 weeks, various options are discussed.  Pregnancies exceeding 16 weeks are advised on alternative services to access.  Children who are pregnant are dealt with on a case by case basis.  The clinic can offer advice on contraception and family planning.
